General information about Lesvos (Lesbos)
Lesvos Island is located in the northeastern Aegean. It is the third largest Greek island after Crete and Evia. It has an area of 1636 square km. 370 km shoreline. It belongs to the North Aegean and is in the prefecture of Lesvos.
The capital of the island of Lesvos is Mytilene, built on the southeast tip of the island. It is a modern city, the commercial and cultural center .
The island has two Gulfs – Gulf of Gera and Gulf of Kalloni - and many bays and promontories. The most important lowlands are the one in Kalloni, in Ippeios, in Perama and in Eresos. The highest mountains are Lepetimnos, Olympus and Psilokoudouno. There are streams which flow through plains; they have been inhabited by Tsichleotas, Mylopotamos Sedountas and Almiropotamos. The eastern and central parts are densely planted with olive trees, pines, firs, trees, chestnuts, beaches and oaks. In general, the flora and fauna of the island is rich.
The climate of Lesvos is mild, Mediterranean climate, with sunshine throughout the year.
Beaches at Lesvos (Lesbos)
You can find in Lesvos beaches with sand, pebble, organized or not, crowded or not, but all with a common thing, the crystal clear waters.
In eastern Lesvos the following beaches are some of them: Beach Tsamakia in Mytilene, Saint Hermogenes just outside the capital, Canoni Beach at Thermi, Yeni Limani outside of Mantamados.
In the North of Lesvos the following beaches are some of them: the beach Kagia in Skala Sikaminias, the beach in Mythimna, in Eftalou, in Petra and in Anaxos.
In western Lesvos the following beaches are some of them: the beach in Gavvathas, in Skala Eresos, in Sigri, in Tavari and Chrousos.
In central Lesvos the following beaches are some of them: the beach at Skala Kalloni and at Parakila.
In the south Lesvos the following beaches are some of them: the beach in Evriaki and Tarti in Gera, Saint Isidoros, Saint Barbara and Melinda in Plomari, in Skala Polichnitos and in Vatera.
